Moyo akinade, Director of Atlanta blind soccer
My name is Moyo Akinade, and I am the Director of Atlanta Blind Soccer for athletes living with blindness and visual impairments. My inspiration to bring blind soccer to Atlanta began in February of 2020 with the United States Paralympic soccer team. This invitation was a huge reward for the dedication I had put towards soccer my entire life, and although my experience was limited to only trial, I left camp feeling rejuvenated.
Growing up in Atlanta, my goal was to play college soccer, turn professional, and possibly attain a job within the soccer market. However, life has its unique way of diverting our plans. You may be wondering… Why Paralympic? The turning point in my life occurred in 2015. During my senior year in college, I suffered a stroke following a soccer match that left me disabled. This defining moment heavily altered my expectations--not only as an athlete, but as a person. In the past five years I have faced many challenges adapting to my disability, but my dedication and passion towards soccer has helped me overcome those obstacles, making me a resilient person in the process. My current ambition is to have a valued professional career in soccer, but my intimate, more personal aspiration, is to assist in the domestic growth of blind soccer in America.
In October of 2023, I was accepted into the Adapt & Thrive Leadership Program hosted by US Soccer and Integrated Dreams. This program will assist in creating more opportunities for athletes of all abilities and backgrounds to participate in blind soccer.
